Samarai Island
Milne Bay - Papua New Guinea
Paradise like no other is on your doorstep
Time in this paradise appears to stand still in Milne Bay islands. Take the boat for two hours down the southern arm of Milne Bay around the southern point into China passage and out to a beautiful island paradise. Visit Samarai island, the location of the former colonial centre for administration of the territory of Papua in the early part of the 20th century. Long since abandoned for this purpose Samarai is today a time capsule of a bygone era. Stroll the neat tree lined streets of the old colonial centre. At its heart is a well maintained cricket oval, which still echoes to the sound of leather against willow on most weekends.

Visit beautiful Kwato Island, just 5 minutes from Samarai. Once a hive of industry Kwato was once a thriving boat building centre. The remnants of the old machinery lie long since abandoned in the tall grass. Today the island echoes to the buzz of insects and the call of birds.

Ascend the tranquil tree lined road at the centre of the island and emerge from the cool of the forest into a clearing with a beautiful stone walled church. Built in 1941 with material brought from Scotland the church stands as testimony to the missionary, Charles Able and his family who first arrived at Kwato in 1891 and established their mission to bring the word of the gospel to the then cannibals of that part of the south seas.
